Las breves pero intensas páginas de Para un ruiseñor no son menos conmovedoras que aquéllas de Hace cuarenta años. Es evidente que su autora rememora el mismo episodio vital, pero ahora con indudable tristeza. Si entonces volvía a poner en pie, con cada detalle, con cada mínimo gesto, un momento pasado que revivía como el más vivo presente, ahora parece no atreverse a volver enteramente a ese mundo. Y esa vida pasada no es ahora una existencia paralela, sino que adopta la figura de un ruiseñor que viene a cantar junto a su ventana, como si el camino de vuelta, que la autora recorría en Hace cuarenta años para volver al pasado vivo, se hubiera cegado de pronto y su recuerdo no fuera ya un mapa de regreso, sino pura melancolía.Con ese lirismo que nos recuerda tanto a San Juan de la Cruz como a John Keats, que va del símbolo a lo real, Para un ruiseñor es mucho más que una memoria del amor: nos enseña a vivir en varios tiempos a la vez, a vivir la vida sin dejar de vivir nuestras vidas anteriores, a sobrevivir a la intensidad pasada sin perderla, y, lo más importante, sin renunciar a la intensidad presente. Pocas obras en prosa hay tan hermosas como ésta.

El lector encontrará tambiénen este volumen relatos como “La casa del juez” (1891), “El sueño delas manos rojas” (1894) o el terrorífico “El entierro de las ratas” (1878).Completan este volumen cuatro relatos reunidos por primera vez porPeter Haining (1980-91): “La cadena del destino” (1875), “Los dualistas” (1887), “El vidente” (1910) y “Las nupcias de la muerte” (1912).Se trata, pues, de una colección de relatos extraños y macabros,que muestra las mejores facetas del arte narrativo de Bram Stoker,con su singular maestría para engarzar los elementos emotivosy dramáticos en una creciente atmósfera de terror.

Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) est un personnage romanesque, moderne, qui prend son destin en main et bouscule les traditions.
